Switching to “Green Power” or renewable power with your local power company can help support your community in developing a more natural and cleaner supply of power and energy. Green power is electricity that is produced in an environmentally friendly manner such as solar, wind or hydro. The reduction in fossil fuels and nuclear energy can help your city have cleaner air.

Participating in green programs offered by your local energy supplier is the first step but reducing your usage seals the deal. Taking a few minutes to turn off electrical devices will help both the environment and your electric bill. The job is simple, when you leave a room, turn off the lights; unplug your computer and printer or any other appliances that does not need to be plugged in. If a plug is in an outlet, it is using energy even if the appliance is off! It is also very important to make sure that the appliances you currently have are maintained and updated to maximize efficiency and energy savings.

Take it a step further a look for the energy star label. The label is part of a program conducted by the U.S. EPA that evaluates and determines energy consumed or saved by products that either rely on energy to run or can reduce energy use through their application. The energy star label means that a product meets minimum energy efficiency standards.
